[Concert Review] Peter Wolf Crier, High Noon Saloon, Oct. 9th

Peter Wolf Crier w/Jeremiah Nelson High Noon Saloon, Oct. 9th, more info at trueendeavors.com Ok, let's start with the good stuff first.  Jeremiah Nelson was pretty good.  He was the opener and he had the small crowd that was at the High Noon Saloon grooving to the beat as some of his songs are tremendously catchy.  It was the first time he was playing together with two of his band mates in front of a live audience so I gave him a lot of credit. But Peter Wolf Crier... They just weren't good.  I'm not going to beat around the bush and say that they gave it their best because they didn't.  Now, lead singer Peter Pisano and drummer Brian Moen are certainly talented individuals who are very skilled at playing, but the problem is they have very few interesting or catchy live songs.  Their best song of the night was "Hard as Nails" and they played it in the opening and everything went downhill from there. PROBLEMS The band's live songs are just not memorable in any way. There's only so much you can do with two people on stage and it seems like something is lost in translation from the album to their live performance.  Pisano has a very haunting way of singing and wailing into the microphone and often the songs build to a heightened acme of frenetic screeching and minimalist drumming and strumming, but it was often times hard to understand anything Pisano was saying.  I know the problems could have been technical, but Peter Wolf Crier was just not really in this performance.  Pisano thanked the audience and at the end of the show he said almost saddened, "We're going to do two more songs and then we'll let you get back to the bar" and it seemed like he was giving up on the audience.  It just felt like people drifted during the show and some of the audience even began talking during the performance, an ostensibly Oscar Wilde method of drowning out a poor performance.  I felt saddened by it.  At the end they played a cover of a Nick Drake song for their encore and I still wasn't feeling it. The silver lining You know what.  It was just one performance and I think this new band just needs more experience playing together in front of a live audience.  This is they're first time headlining and they only have one album out and they just need to keep at it and they will get better.  Like I said before, "Hard as Nails" was fantastic, it's just the other songs...weren't. -Soren Nieminen

World's Worst iPod: Jump 'N The Saddle Band "The Curly Shuffle"
A silly novelty tune with a jump swing beat took the country by storm--at least parts of it--in early 1984. A Chicago band called Jump 'N The Saddle scored a #15 with the Curly Shuffle...and it seems a lot of people have some pretty awesome...

World's Worst iPod:Dr. Hook "When You're in Love With a Beautiful Woman"
Here's a song that inspired high-schoolers to act like 12-year-olds back in the late 1970's. The lyric "when you're in love with a beautiful woman, it's hard," was just so darn hilarious!! Dr. Hook had a lot of hits in the 70s, and...
