[Concert Review] Michael Franti & Spearhead

October 9th at the Overture Center.  Special thanks to www.trueendeavors.com Having performed music for over 20 years Michael Franti is no novice on the stage.  His performance on Saturday night was nothing short of exceptional.  Going in I was curious to see if Franti would play some of his older songs or stick to those from his newest release with Spearhead, Sound of Sunshine.  He did cover mostly material from the new album, and I was a little disappointed he didn’t branch into his older stuff a little more but hey, I’m far from complaining.  My personal favorite was the group’s rendition of I’ll Be Waiting. This track is a little more rock and sounded great inside the capital theater.  Other songs to be covered were Sound of Sunshine, Hey, Hey, Hey, and the best received was, of course, Say Hey (I Love You) which was the show closer.  For this last song he invited kids and seniors onto the stage with him and even enlisted the help of a young girl for the chorus.   Franti has rare stage presence.  He has a commanding aura about him that fills up a room and you can’t help but feel yourself acclimate with it. It’s like the sunshine and positivity shoot out at you from his eyes and you just feel yourself start to smile.  Not only is Franti an amazing front man but this group is filled with remarkable musicians.  Their performances with each other were very natural and comfortable.  I was especially impressed with guitarist Jay Bowman who had some great solos and even better enthusiasm.  Best parts of the show: -There was a packed house at the Capital Theater and it was a huge surprise for those of us in the balcony section when Michael and his guitar appeared up there with us.  He walked around all the way up to the top of the theater and then back down to the lower level to do a little more mingling before he went back to the stage.  And he didn’t miss a note the whole time. -A lot of people would kill to meet their favorite musicians but not many people ever get the chance.  Well for those of us who were at Michael’s concert on Saturday, we were in luck.  Michael jumped back into the crowd after the show to take pictures and give out hugs! Studio M was lucky enough to have Michael & Spearhead stop by.  Check out our interview here!

World's Worst iPod: Jump 'N The Saddle Band "The Curly Shuffle"
A silly novelty tune with a jump swing beat took the country by storm--at least parts of it--in early 1984. A Chicago band called Jump 'N The Saddle scored a #15 with the Curly Shuffle...and it seems a lot of people have some pretty awesome...

World's Worst iPod:The Human League "(Keep Feeling) Fascination
It was almost a clean-sweep this morning for the synthesizer heavy "(Keep Feeling) Fascination") by the Human League. Everybody was in the mood for a little 80s fun! It made it up to #8 on the charts in 1983, a couple of years after the British pop...

World's Worst iPod:Dr. Hook "When You're in Love With a Beautiful Woman"
Here's a song that inspired high-schoolers to act like 12-year-olds back in the late 1970's. The lyric "when you're in love with a beautiful woman, it's hard," was just so darn hilarious!! Dr. Hook had a lot of hits in the 70s, and...

World's Worst iPod:Escape Club "Wild Wild West"
Remember when we were headed for the 90s..and grooving to the Escape Club? This band from London scored a number 1 hit in 1988 with the song "Wild Wild West." It's probably the only song you remember from that band--but they weren't a...

World's Worst iPod: Wayne Newton "Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast"
With Father's Day coming up, we thought we'd choose one of the greatest dad songs of all time.  But since that song wasn't on the iPod, we decided to go with "Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast" by Wayne Newton. This song made...

Day 4: The Final Day of Bonnaroo
Today was another busy day at Bonnaroo. We started the day off by seeing Shakey Graves. I missed his show in Madison earlier this year so he was a must see on my list. Loved him! Right as he ended, a press conference with Ed Helms, Abigail...

Day 3: Saturday
Saturday was a very busy day! So many Triple M bands to see! So many concerts were back to back, so we did a lot of walking back and forth from the stages to the media compound. If you're ever in need of getting more steps in during the day,...

Day 2: Friday - Variety, the Spice of Life
Day 2 is upon us! Despite being up fairly late and not sleeping super well (first time camping...I'll get used to it I'm sure), I was hoping to sleep in just a little bit, but my body had other plans. It woke me up at 5:45am for the hell of it. I...
