[Concert Review] Max Weinberg's Big Band, Majestic Theatre

This past Tuesday the full sound of a fifteen piece band complete with a full horn section resonated from the Majestic Theatre in downtown Madison.  Legendary drummer Max Weiberg, known for his work as a drummer with Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band and also his work as band leader for Conan O'Brien's late night talk shows, arrived in Madison with his recently formed Big Band.  Weinberg informed the audience that the band had been together for only two weeks but their shows were all going great and that "we all agree, this could be something big for all of us." Max Weinberg's Big Band played a great collection of music.  One of the highlights of the show included the playing of a Count Basie arranged medley of Beatles songs including "Help" and "Kansas City."  A second highlight was the funky theme song to the 1957 police drama "The M Squad."  Weinberg joked that despite the fact that "The M Squad" was not on very long, the song was catchy and fun, and that he (Max) has experience with short lived television shows, poking fun at his friend Conan O'Brien's short-lived "Tonight Show" attempt. The Majestic was filled with a mixed audience including both "experienced" big band fans along with members of the younger Conan O'Brien worshiping generation.  Although audience members were likely at the show for different reasons, it was clear the audience was truly enjoying the great beats of Max Weinberg's Big Band.  The talent that joined Max on stage as part of his Big Band was outstanding.  The band sounded full and dynamic from the alto saxophones to the stand-up bass. It had been a while since I had seen a full horn section in action and the rich sound reminded me of my middle school trumpet playing days.  I will definitely have to check out more classic Count Basie and other big band recordings after hearing this great showcase. If everything goes as well as Weinberg anticipates and "big things" happen for his Big Band, Triple M listeners may have an opportunity sooner rather than later to see Max Weinberg's Big Band back in Madison.

Sadly no La Bamba... But there was a La Bamba sighting at Bonnaroo when Conan performed. I think La Bamba has been on tour with Conan since the end of the Tonight Show.

Excellent review!! I was there too (Thanks, Triple M, for the tickets - I was lucky that day:) and it was a great show. Max is such a Frank Lloyd Wright fanboy. Lots of fun. The finale, the ultra-jazzy Kitty's Back, was amazing.

World's Worst iPod: Torn Between Two Lovers by Mary MacGregor
Today's song was written by Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary. It was inspired by the 1957 novel Doctor Zhivago. No one was inspired by the song this morning. It was rejected by almost all the listeners.
Kitty used to be a Goth--almost
Today is World Goth Day, a day to celebrate the post-punk, anti-establishment, dark clothes-wearing subculture. I'm pretty sure I was a Goth for at least for little while, for two reasons. 1) I almost hardly ever wear pastels. 2) I used to...

World's Worst iPod: Funky Cold Medina by Tone Loc
