Did you know Joan Baez dated Steve Jobs? She's 69-years-old today. She started performing when she was 18-years-old and had her first album in 1960 when she was 19-years-old. She's a punchline in an Arrested Development episode (my all-time favorite show) and has over 30 albums including songs in 8 different languages.
And she came to Madison on Friday Oct. 8th and played a host of songs and showed the audience that the power/beauty of Baez comes from her crisp presence and roaring vocal strength that has not diminished with age.
The concert was extraordinary. She launched off with the song "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and the audience launched into a rapturous applause afterward, thanking a woman who along with providing great music, has been at the forefront of many philanthropic and social equality fronts and has lead a fascinating life. Fed up with the pedantic nature of education, she told the audience that she never wanted to go to college, she wanted to explore the world.
Joan Baez also was conversational with the audience and gave some back story to her life, told a few hilarious jokes and sang some incredible songs. The thing with going to a Baez concert is there are a few staple songs that you expect, but she has such a deep repertoire of music at her disposal to impart on audiences that you will definitely hear something new each time with her. She played her song "Stewball" about a horse that she told the audience she hadn't sung to an audience in over 20 years.
The "magical" moment of the concert:
There were a couple awesome moments, but I loved when she sung Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" and for the last 30-45 seconds of the song she gave a raspy impression of Dylan. It gave me goosebumps.
The next magical moment was for the encore and she played "Imagine" by John Lennon and the whole audience sang along. Beautiful.
Overall:
This was an amazing concert. Joan Baez still has an incredible voice at 69-years-old and she is fun to listen to. And I loved her "House of the Rising Sun" version, a song Joan Baez said is a "must know" for any musician who wants to play folk music. I really enjoyed spending my time listening to her.
