Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
Oct. 13th, Majestic Theatre, more info at trueendeavors.com
Hometown: Fayston, Vermont
Album: Self-titled (released in June)
Sounds like: Bonnie Raitt, Jefferson Airplane, Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, Janis Joplin
Grace Potter exists for the stage. She has this energetic rapturous presence that is contagious. I hate to make the comparison, but she reminds me of Grace Slick, the lead singer behind several bands including Jefferson Airplane. And to further the comparison, they performed an awesome cover of "White Rabbit" by the band. Here's a video of the song below:
Grace Potter visited Studio M back in 2007 - 85,000+ video views later, Grace is still rockin'! Check it out below:
In the words of Vonnegut, "So it goes." This band is so much fun to watch. They have these incredible songs and their transitions are effortless and flawless, heated by the fires of musical convergence and rhythm. These are talented individuals, but Grace Potter is the driver of this van. She has this low salty voice that is marvelous and she exudes excitement during the show.
"Nothing but water" was the greatest raw song of the night. It reminded me of a Pink Floyd jam session that had most of the crowd dancing around. Then later on in the show, the whole band gathered around the drum set and started pounding away for over a minute. It was this visceral performance art where a gathered force played and played, stirring up this eclectic musical soup. Grace Potter really enjoys the music and so does the band. They're lively and jactate around the stage with precision and tranquility at moments and shoot out musical chords like fireworks the next.Best Part of the Show:
"White Rabbit" and "Paris (Ooh La La)" were the greatest songs. But Grace Potter also made a snotty remark about how Vermont cheese was better than Wisconsin cheese. She took it back at the end of the show.
Worst Part of the Show:
Two women behind me who talked loudly. It's a concert, not your living room. It's not sacred ground, but when a good band is playing: BE QUIET! In hindsight, I really wish I had said that to them.
Overall:
One of the top shows of the year. They can play, they can sing and they rocked out. Definitely check them out when they come back to Madison.
