[Concert Review] Donavon Frankenreiter, Majestic Theatre, Nov. 15th

Donavon Frankenreiter, Majestic Theatre, Nov. 15th, Donavon Frankenreiter has been riding the waves of success for a while, from being sponsored as a professional surfer when he was 16-years-old to recording music.  Surfing and making music isn't a bad way to make a living in my opinion.  He follows in the tradition of Jack Johnson and plays the soft rock with surfer culture motif that has been his life.  And Mr. Frankenreiter came to Madison to perform at the Majestic Theatre and put on a pretty good show. Highlight of the Show: Donavon Frankenreiter has been known for taking well-known songs and covering them, slowing them down and making wholistically different songs.  He did a really good cover of Tom Petty's "American Girl" which was awesome.  He also did the same song when he was in Studio M and you can check out the audio here. Intro Song: "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple.  I love it when band's have an intro song and this was a perfect one for them. Musical Motif: Donavon played through a lot of his career songs, but had some new stuff off of his new album, Glow, that was released in October.  The best song is probably the title one, but "Shadow" and "Keeping Me Away From You" are pretty good as well.  Here's the title song below: Energy: Donavon seems to me to be a pretty laid back guy.  He has a stage presence, but he isn't very engaging with the audience.  His demeanor is to let the audience sit back and enjoy the music, and I'm cool with that.  He's mellow and always offered a polite "Thanks" to the audience before introducing his next song. Overall: This was a pretty fun show to go to.  You got see a lot of ladies bearing the trademarked mustaches, but I noticed that most of them took theirs off midway through the show.  I assume they itch a lot.  Frankenreiter put on a good show and is band is composed of good musicians who know how to play and jam for the audience.  Overall, it was an enjoyable experience and I recommend everyone to at least give him a listen.  Not all of his music is my specific style, mostly because I don't really empathize with surfer music besides the Beach Boys, but he has put out some good music and his new album Glow has some great songs on it.

Today's song was written by Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary. It was inspired by the 1957 novel Doctor Zhivago. No one was inspired by the song this morning. It was rejected by almost all the listeners.

Today is World Goth Day, a day to celebrate the post-punk, anti-establishment, dark clothes-wearing subculture. I'm pretty sure I was a Goth for at least for little while, for two reasons. 1) I almost hardly ever wear pastels. 2) I used to...
